A balanced diet is a dietary pattern that includes a variety of different types of foods in appropriate amounts and proportions so that the nutrients needed for good health are obtained. It includes foods from all food groups in the right amounts, with an emphasis on whole, unprocessed foods and an appropriate amount of physical activity. A balanced diet can help you maintain a healthy weight, get the nutrients you need, and reduce your risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
Here are some tips for following a balanced diet:
Eat a variety of different types of foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, protein sources (such as meat, poultry, fish, beans, nuts, and seeds), and healthy fats.
Choose whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible.
Limit your intake of added sugars, salt, and unhealthy fats (such as trans fats and saturated fats).
Drink plenty of water.
Eat a moderate amount of calories to meet your energy needs, based on your age, sex, weight, height, and physical activity level.
Get enough fiber, which can help with digestion and weight management.
Consider taking a daily multivitamin to fill any nutrient gaps in your diet.
It's important to remember that everyone's nutritional needs are different, so it's a good idea to talk to a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian to determine the right balance of nutrients for you.
